How It Works — The Overview
Before we discuss a single brick, we want you to understand the system — because once you understand it, you'll see why no serious builder should operate any other way.
The core principle: Your financial commitment to each stage releases only after that stage is physically completed and verified against your approved plan. You are never paying for work that hasn't happened. This is how we operate on every project, without exception.
The Full Build Process — Stage by Stage
Every stage below is a physical checkpoint, documented with photographs before the next stage begins. Here is the complete anatomy of a SquareBuild new house construction.
Pre-Build: Quote, Plan Review & Contract
Before a single shovel of dirt moves, we review your building plan, understand your timeline, and prepare a written itemised labour quotation. The quotation breaks down each stage and its associated labour cost.
Once agreed, a formal contract is signed detailing the full scope of work, the payment schedule, and the responsibilities of both parties. No verbal commitments. No ambiguous handshakes. Everything in writing before day one.
Setting Out & Site Establishment
The most underestimated stage of any build. If the setting out is wrong, everything built on top of it is wrong. We peg the building from the approved plan, establish profile boards at each corner, and verify all dimensions before any ground is broken.
This stage determines whether your rooms will be the correct size, your walls the correct length, and your structure correctly positioned on the plot. We measure and confirm before we proceed — not guess and adjust after.
Excavation & Foundation
Foundations carry every load the building will ever produce. We excavate to a minimum depth of 700mm, prepare a 150mm hardcore base, compact it correctly, and lay the foundation concrete in the correct mix ratio for the soil conditions on site.
This stage is photographed at every critical point — excavation depth, hardcore depth, concrete pour, and initial curing. Once covered by substructure walling, the foundation can never be inspected again. That is why we document it before it disappears.
Substructure Walling & DPC
Walling below the Damp Proof Course level. Every course is levelled and plumbed as it rises. The DPC — a physical barrier against rising damp — is installed at the correct height and overlapped correctly at all joins and corners.
A DPC installed incorrectly results in damp walls within years. This is one of the most common causes of cracking and paint failure in Zimbabwean homes built by unaccountable builders. We photograph the DPC placement before it is covered by mortar.
Superstructure Walling to Window Level
Above DPC to window sill height — where the interior room layout becomes physically visible for the first time. Door and window openings are formed, dimensions verified against the plan, and all walling checked for plumb and level at each course.
Window sill level is also where embedded plumbing sleeves must be positioned before walling continues. We coordinate with the plumber at this point so nothing is missed before the walls close up.
Window Level to Lintel Level
Window frame height through to lintel height. Lintels — reinforced concrete beams — are cast or installed over every door and window opening to carry the load of the wall above the gap. An undersized or under-reinforced lintel will crack the wall above it over time.
We cast lintels in the correct size for each opening span and with the correct steel reinforcement. No pre-cast shortcuts for spans that require in-situ concrete.
Lintel Level to Wall Plate
The final walling stage — from lintel level to the wall plate, the horizontal beam on which the roof structure will rest. This is where the wall reaches its full height and the structural envelope of the building is complete.
The wall plate is secured at the correct height and level. Once signed off, the structural masonry phase is complete and the roof has a level, solid base to work from.
Final Handover & Documentation
Before the final payment releases, a full client walkthrough is conducted. Every stage's photographs are compiled and handed over as a permanent build record. Punch-list items are resolved. The client confirms in writing that the work matches the contracted scope.
You receive: a complete photographic record from foundation to wall plate, a stage-payment receipt trail, and your project manager's contact for any post-build questions. The relationship doesn't end at handover.
Your Site in Your Pocket
Most homeowners can only visit the site once or twice a week. That leaves four to five days of work unseen. In those unsupervised days, most construction fraud and most quality failures happen.
Our project manager sends you a WhatsApp update at the end of every working day on site — not a vague message, but a factual report covering what was completed, what materials were used, and what starts tomorrow.
If something unexpected comes up — a material shortage, a plan deviation, a weather delay — you hear about it the same day, with a proposed solution attached. You are never the last person to know.
Good evening. Site update for today:
✅ Substructure walling — north and east elevations complete (7 courses).
✅ DPC installed on east wing — photos sent separately.
📦 55 bags of cement remaining from 80 delivered.
📅 Tomorrow: south elevation substructure begins. 7:00am start.
Thank you. Please confirm DPC level is correct on east side before covering it.
Confirmed. DPC sits at 150mm above finished external ground level as per plan. Photo 4 in today's set shows the measurement. Will not be covered until you confirm you've seen it.
